| Dear Rev. Know-It-All,
Why we bless ourselves with holy water
going in and out of church?
Please reply.

Dear Misty,
This is a custom that actually goes back
to the Jewish temple. It was the custom to wash before prayer upon
entering the temple. It is a gesture of leaving one world and entering
another.
The church, like the temple, was supposed
to be a little bit of heaven - that’s why we should enter with reverence
and the symbolic washing of our hands is supposed to remind us where we
really are, and that we really belong to heaven since the moment we were
baptized.
